A Farm Upgrade can be bought from the market. This increases the size of a player's farm. There are five expansions that can be bought, with either farm cash or, if a farmer has enough neighbors, coins. All farms are square. The expansion is always added to the bottom two sides of the farm. Farm expansions cannot be purchased until all lower options have been bought as well. For example, to get the Big Ole plantation, you must buy the Big Family Farm, Family Farm and Homestead upgrades beforehand.

During the January 15th Podcast Zynga said they were very close to releasing the Mighty Plantation, and working on additional larger sizes. The Mighty Plantation will be available early for players that have become fans of FarmVille in the official Facebook Fan Page created by Zynga. On January 20 some players had the opportunity to buy the Mighty Plantation for 40 FarmVille Cash. On January 22, the Mighty Plantation was made available for all Fans registered on the official Facebook page for 60 FarmVille Cash or 500,000 coins.

During the Winter Holiday event, the Snow Blanket upgrade is available. This covers a farmer's farm in snow, costing 1000 coins. To reverse this, they can simply buy the Green Pasturesupgrade.

On February 19, FarmVille added 2 new features in the "Upgrade Farm" tab. Arborists and "Farmhands. They both cost 5 farm cash. The Arborists will harvest all of a farmer's trees at once; farmhands will harvest all animals at once. These two helpers may only be used once.

On February 24th, FarmVille expanded the Gift Box from holding only 30 gifts to 50 gifts.
